Description

This is a skeleton of European hippopotamus (Hippopotamus antiquus), an extinct species of the genus Hippopotamus, lived in Europe during Pleistocene. Its zone encompassed a territory from the Iberian Peninsula to the British Isles and to the Rhine River. By the look of its skeleton, it had to be larger than modern hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius). European hippopotamuses appeared 1,8 mln years ago. Moreover, maybe the Cretan Dwarf Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus creutzburgi, it's extinct too) could be a descendent of the European hippopotamus, as result of insular dwarfism on the island of Crete.
