Description

This is a skull belonging to an extinct mammal, the Arsinoitherium (Arsinoitherium zitteli). It lived in the Oligocene, and its remains were discovered in the Faiyum Oasis (Egypt). Behold: it had two huge parallel horns, constituted with bone; it used this, very probably, in order to discourage predators from attacking it. In any case, it was in and of itself an enormous beast: it was practically twice as big as modern rhinoceroses, thus it had almost nothing to fear. As far as we know, it lived near to swamps and its teeth structure shows that maybe it fed with aquatic plants and other soft vegetation.
